Raja Shantanu's Marrage with Ganga :-

Once while King Shantanu of Hastinapur was on hunt he got thirsty and went in find of water and found a rushing water in a distance. He ran towards the sound . After reaching he saw a beautiful woman who was like a woman from swarga (heaven). Who was Ganga   . Shantanu fell in love with her and kept the proposal of marrage . Ganga excepted but kept a condition that Shantanu should not ask her or question her on any act which she is performing if he questions she would live Shantanu and go away  from Hastinapur. Shantanu accepted this condition. They had a Gandharva Vivaha . A type of marrage in which no one are invited. Many years  passed.

Ganga gave birth to the first child who was a boy . Whole Hastinapur rejoiced . Ganga took her child in front of Shantanu and dropped it into the holy water of Ganga. Like this seven children's were dropped in Ganga . Shantanu kept quite he was filled with sorrows.

But remembered the  condition asked by which he had excepted . When the eightht son 

took birth and when Ganga took that child and was going to drop that child in Ganga Shantanu stopped Ganga and asked why are throwing my son's in your water. Ganga said "Oh! King you have broked your promise . Those children were cursed from rishis and were Gandharvas they have reached their heavenly abode. This child is very noble child I will take him and I am leaving you forever." After this she disappeared with the child . Shantanu was very sad on getting ditached from his wife and as well as his son.
